June
Dancks Speaks to Insurance Professionals
Attorney Thérèse Wiley Dancks lectured at the annual New York State Bar Association Course entitled "Law School for Claims Professionals." Thérèse discussed the topic of premises liability to an audience of approximately 125 insurance claims examiners, supervisors and brokers. The seminar was co-sponsored by the Torts, Insurance and Compensation Law section of the New York State Bar Association, Upstate New York RIMS, the CPCU Claims Interest Section, the CPCU Risk Management Interest Section and the CPCU Agents and Broker Interest Section of the Society of CPCU for the Northeastern New York Region.
Gale Elected as Secretary of ABOTA
Attorney Catherine A. Gale has been elected to serve as secretary of the Central New York Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates. The preservation of the civil jury trial is the primary purpose of ABOTA, a national organization of trial attorneys who display requisite trial skills, civility and integrity for invited membership in the organization.
Boris Re-certified as EMT
Traci A. Boris received her re-certification as an Emergency Medical Technician. Traci and her husband are active members of the Stittville Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department. In addition to serving the department as an EMT, Traci is currently helping organize the department’s major fund-raiser, "Swine and Shine 2007," a pig roast and car show to be held on July 29, 2007.
Dancks Serves as Secretary to Board of Directors
Thérèse Wiley Dancks has been elected secretary of the St. Elizabeth College of Nursing Board of Directors. Thérèse is beginning her second year on the Board.

Dancks & Snyder Participate in New York State Bar Association Course
Attorney Thérèse Wiley Dancks recently chaired the Syracuse section of the New York State Bar Association program entitled "Civil Practice—How to Commence a Civil Lawsuit" on May 15, 2007. The day-long program covered all aspects of a civil lawsuit with a view from both plaintiff’s and defendant’s perspectives. This is the third year the state organization has asked Ms. Dancks to chair the course. Attorney David Snyder joined the other invited speakers at the annual course where he discussed the topic of discovery tactics which included specific rules of individual judges and other local rules.
Boris & VanBeveren Author Bar Association Article
Attorneys Traci A. Boris and Matthew J. VanBeveren recently co-wrote an article entitled "Use of Bills of Particulars and Interrogatories" for a statewide program sponsored by the New York State Bar Association.

Attorney Snyder Becomes a Father
Attorney David Snyder is pleased to announce the birth of his son, Luke Anthony Snyder. David and his wife, Mary Snyder, welcomed their first child who weighed in at 8 lbs and 4 oz and was 20 inches long.

Dancks Lectures to Nurses and Nurse Practitioners
Attorney Thérèse Wiley Dancks recently participated in a two-part lecture series to nursing students at St. Elizabeth College of Nursing in Utica, New York. She discussed risk management and avoiding nursing malpractice, among other things, to the graduating class of the Registered Nursing program at St. Elizabeth. Attorney Dancks also recently spoke for the SUNY Upstate Nurse Practitioners Program on legal topics of interest to the graduating class of the nurse practitioner program. She discussed medical professional employment contracts, risk management and medical malpractice.
Gale Speaks to Physicians
Partner Catherine A. Gale was invited to speak at Grand Rounds for orthopedic surgeons and residents at SUNY Upstate University Hospital recently. Her lecture entitled "A Legal Primer for Physicians" covered topics including the statutory requirements for the management of confidential information, permitted disclosure and the intricacies of proper authorization for such disclosure. Catherine is a frequent guest speaker at Grand Rounds for various medical departments at Upstate University Hospital.

Attorney Max Gale Becomes a Father
Attorney Max Gale and his wife Kristen welcomed their first child, Nathaniel Adams Gale. Nathaniel is the grandson of Attorney Catherine Gale.

Paralegal Brentlinger Leads Girl Scouts
Throughout the month of October, paralegal Mary Kae Brentlinger continued to actively lead the Weedsport Girl Scout Troop 491 as they collected useful items to send to a U.S. soldier from Weedsport who is stationed in Iraq. Over 100 lbs. of materials such as personal hygiene items, candy, books and playing cards were sent overseas. The Troop also spent a fall day making apple and pumpkin pies from scratch for the Town of Brutus food pantry.

Dancks Joins St. Elizabeth College of Nursing Board
Attorney Thérèse Wiley Dancks has been elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the St. Elizabeth College of Nursing. The College of Nursing, located in Utica, New York and associated with St. Elizabeth Medical Center, was established in 1904 by the Sisters of St. Francis. The College confers the degree of Associate in Applied Science on duly qualified students successfully completing the Registered Nursing program. The mission of St. Elizabeth College of Nursing is to provide a strong foundation of theory and nursing practice within an environment of academic excellence that promotes active citizenship and a desire for life-long learning. In the spirit of the Franciscan tradition and values, the College is committed to creating a caring learning environment for diverse student populations. Thérèse serves on the By-Laws Committee of the Board.

Dancks & VanBeveren to Write Law Review Article
Syracuse University College of Law sought the expertise of Attorneys Thérèse Wiley Dancks and Matthew VanBeveren to write an article on health law for the upcoming Annual Survey on New York Law published by the College. The Syracuse Law Review, a student edited publication, publishes scholarly articles written by law students, law professors and practicing attorneys several times throughout the year. The Annual Survey of New York Law is published each spring. The article to be authored by Attorneys Dancks and VanBeveren will be published in the spring of 2007. It will encompass an overview of the status of health law in New York State including current government regulations, trends in medical malpractice claims, and other issues affecting healthcare providers and health insurers.
Attorney Snyder Serves on Political Committee
David Snyder has been appointed to serve a second two-year term in the Town of Clay Republican Committee. As a committee member, David participates in the selection of candidates for local town races as well as joining the entire Onondaga County Republican Committee in the selection of candidates for county positions.
Dancks Serves on Campaign Committee
Thérèse Wiley Dancks has joined the Dennis McDermott for Supreme Court campaign committee. Judge McDermott seeks the position of Supreme Court for the Sixth Judicial District which encompasses a large portion of the Leatherstocking area of Central New York State. The retirement of Judge William O’Brien from the Sixth Judicial District Supreme Court in Madison County has provided the opening for the position. Dancks will serve on the finance and fund raising sub-committee for the campaign.

July is community service month at Gale & Dancks.
Gale & Dancks is not only dedicated to providing the best possible legal representation to its clients but it is also committed to its community. Partners and associates are encouraged to participate actively in their communities and to give their support and expertise to those organizations which enhance and benefit our neighbors. For the month of July, we thought it might be appropriate to highlight some of the community, charitable and pro bono activities of the firm.
Attorney Catherine A. Gale sits on the Cazenovia College Board of Trustees where she serves on the Executive committee as well as the Governance committee, helping to write bylaws for the college. Catherine also serves as a Trustee on the Board of the Community Health Foundation of Western and Central New York where she assists in evaluating requests for funding by not-for-profit organizations which help to meet the healthcare needs of the citizens of the State of New York. She also gives her time to pro bono work with indigent clients, particularly professionals with addiction and psychiatric issues, to local religious groups and donates her skills as a speaker to not-for-profit organizations across the State, particularly those involved with nursing. She recently completed a term on the Advisory Board for Excellus Blue Cross/Blue Shield and simultaneously accepted a new board assignment. Catherine was appointed to serve on the Grievance Committee for the 5th Judicial District by Presiding Justice Pigott. The Committee investigates, mediates and adjudicates complaints against attorneys.
Attorney Thérèse Wiley Dancks serves as President of the Board of Directors of the Hiscock Legal Aid Society. The Society was founded in 1949 to provide free legal assistance to indigent residents of Onondaga County. The Society provides legal representation in Family Court cases, parole revocation and extradition defense, landlord/tenant eviction proceedings, immigration related matters, unemployment hearings, and domestic violence matters including divorce, separation and family court issues. As a City Court Small Claims Arbitrator, she volunteers her time to act as the decision-maker for parties who have their small claims disputes heard in City Court. Thérèse is also a member of the 5th District Pro Bono Committee, which was formed in January of 2005. The Committee is comprised of a cross section of members of the bench and bar from the six counties which comprise the 5th Judicial District. The Committee’s goal is to increase pro bono services in the entire District through the cooperative efforts of the judges, lawyers, bar associations and entities already engaged in improving poor people’s access to justice in the District. This fall, Thérèse begins her first term as a member of the Board of Directors of St. Elizabeth College of Nursing.
Attorney Traci A. Boris is a certified EMT with the Stittville Volunteer Fire Department. Members of the Fire Department respond to a variety of calls including fire calls, motor vehicle accidents and emergency medical calls. Traci also serves on the Stittville Fire Department’s fire prevention training for the children in local schools. As a member of the Holland Patent Central School Board, Traci is entrusted with assisting in the goal of providing excellence in the educational programs provided to the students who attend the schools. As a board member, Traci is involved in activities that include fiscal responsibilities as well as dealing with personnel issues and special education issues. In addition, Board members work with the administration, draft and revise policies and procedures, develop a budget for the school district to propose to voters and communicate with community members.
Attorney Max D. Gale serves as a member of the Onondaga Pastoral Counseling Center’s Board of Trustees. OPCC is the largest pastoral-counseling center in the nation and serves people over a two county radius. Some of the services OPCC provides include individual, group, family, and couple counseling, community education, and training in pastoral care. Max has volunteered his expertise to assist local citizens settle their disputes in Small Claims Court by acting as a volunteer arbitrator. As a musician he has also volunteered his performance skills at various fund raising events.
Attorney David B. Snyder volunteers his time to the weekly Talk to a Lawyer program sponsored by the Onondaga County Bar Association. He also sponsors a child through the Christian Children's Foundation.
Attorney Matthew J. VanBeveren helped to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society by running in a recent half marathon held by the society.
Paralegal Marilyn Vinette is a Children’s Church leader at First Christian Assembly and is excited to be teaching a class for her church's Vacation Bible School this summer.
Paralegal Mary Kae Brentlinger is the proud leader of Girl Scout Troop 491, first year juniors, who just returned from an adventure at Enchanted Forest Water Safari, and Girl Scout Troop 912, first year seniors, who are currently participating in various fund raising activities in order to go on a cruise next year. She is also a team parent for the Finger Lakes Minor Soccer League.
This year Gale & Dancks will be launching its annual Community Service day. The entire office will be giving an afternoon of time to serve lunch to the guests of the Samaritan Center located in Downtown Syracuse. The Samaritan Center provides meals and other support for Syracuse’s indigent population.

Attorneys Thérèse Wiley Dancks and Traci A. Boris lectured on Post Trial Matters for the Onondaga County Bar Association’s Litigation at Lunch Series. They addressed a group of attorneys on the topics "Motion Practice After a Verdict" and "Settlements".
Women in Business Honors Dancks
Attorney Thérèse Wiley Dancks was honored with the Women in Business Award at the sixth annual Women in Business luncheon. Thérèse and the other women in her class were selected by a panel of judges based on excellence in their professional fields. Catherine Gale, honored by the organization in 2002, presented the Award to her partner.
State Grievance Committee Names Catherine Gale
Attorney Catherine A. Gale has been appointed to the Fifth Judicial District Grievance Committee by the Fourth Department Appellate Division of the State Supreme Court. The Committee is charged with investigation of complaints against attorneys, promotion of ethical practices by enforcement of the code of conduct and with discipline of attorneys.
VanBeveren Runs for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
Completing a half marathon in Lake Placid, NY, Attorney Matthew J. VanBeveren ran to raise money to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Dancks Races for the Cure
Teaming up with the CNY Women’s Bar Association, Attorney Thérèse Wiley Dancks ran the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation’s Race for the Cure. Money raised during this event will be used for both research and awareness education in our community. Ms. Dancks is an avid runner and has run many events this season including the Vermont City Marathon. She is also a former member of the Komen Foundation's board.

Dancks Helps Organize Pro Bono CLE
Thérèse Wiley Dancks participated in organizing and administrating the 5th District Pro Bono Committee’s first continuing legal education best practices seminar held in Onondaga County. Other similar seminars in the District are slated for the Fall of 2006. The presenters include Supreme Court Judges, lawyers and court personnel. There is no charge to lawyer attendees. However, in exchange for the CLE credit given for attendance at the program, the attendees agree to accept one pro bono case or program or provide other needed pro bono services such as staffing at will clinics or other pro se clinics.

Snyder & VanBeveren Graduated from Upstate Medical University’s Mini Medical Program
Attorneys David B. Snyder and Matthew J. VanBeveren completed Upstate Medical University’s Mini Medical Program. This four-week program featured faculty members from Upstate Medical University and topics ranged from "Proteins and the Molecular Basis of Disease" to "The Biological Basis of Parkinson’s Disease".
Pro Bono Award to Snyder
The Onondaga County Bar Association presented Attorney David B. Snyder with the Distinguished Pro Bono Service Award for his work in the Talk to a Lawyer Program held at community centers throughout the city. David and his wife, Mary Snyder, who received the award at the same time, were also nominated for the statewide award for young lawyers and received Honorable Mentions from the New York State Bar Association.

Gale & Dancks Speak with Medical Professionals
Continuing education is the hallmark of the professional and Gale & Dancks not only takes education of its attorneys and staff seriously but is available to lend its expertise to our clients and other professionals. In the month of March, we were pleased to respond to the requests for educational programs for nursing and medicine. Attorney Thérèse Wiley Dancks provided the second lecture in a two-part series to nursing students at St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing in Utica, NY on the topics "Hospital Nursing & Medical Malpractice; Legal Accountability and Responsibility of Nurses in the Clinical Setting". She discussed managing and minimizing risks and informed consent, among other things. Attorney Catherine A. Gale returned for her annual Grand Rounds Presentation to The Department of Orthopedics at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY and spoke on the topic "Business Aspects of the Practice of Medicine". The informal lecture included discussions on such issues as employment contracts for the newly minted physician, entity formations, billing problems and Stark and anti-kickback red flags.
VanBeveren Attends Conference
Attorney Matthew J. VanBeveren recently attended a full day CLE: "Bridge the Gap" sponsored by the Onondaga County Bar Association. Topics included commencing the civil action and motion practice. The event featured a luncheon with keynote speaker Honorable Deborah H. Karalunas.

Gale Gives Grand Rounds at SUNY Upstate Medical University
The Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery at SUNY Upstate Medical University recently invited Attorney Catherine A. Gale to give Grand Rounds. She spoke to the physicians and surgeons on the topic "A Legal Primer for Physicians" and covered such topics as HIPAA, consent issues, subpoenas, and federal regulations. January’s lecture begins a four-part series at the Medical School. Ms. Gale has been invited to return in the fall and again next year and will cover such topics as medical malpractice, medical licensure and discipline, and Medicare/Medicaid Fraud.
Partner Attends Conference Sponsored by Boston University College of Medicine
Attorney Max D. Gale attended the 22nd Annual Conference on Obstetrics, Gynecology, Perinatal Medicine, Neonatology & the Law in January. Sponsored by the Boston University College of Medicine and the Center for Human Genetics, the annual conference draws medical experts from around the world who lectured on such topics as Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy, Obstetrical Catastrophes, Bariatric Surgeries and Subsequent Pregnancies and Sub-Clinical Chorioamnionitis and Cerebral Palsy.

Dancks Chairs State Bar Association Course
Attorney Thérèse Wiley Dancks chaired the Syracuse section of the New York State Bar Association Program entitled "Basics of Civil Practice-The Trial" on November 29, 2005. The daylong program covered all aspects of the trial from jury selection to summations. This is the third year the State Organization has asked Ms. Dancks to chair the course.
Gale Speaks for the NYSBA CLE course
Attorney Catherine A. Gale recently joined other invited speakers at the annual NYSBA Course on "Basics of Civil Practice" on November 29, 2005 where she discussed the trial topic of direct examinations.
Partner completes Health Law Course
Attorney Traci A. Boris recently attended a three-day program in Chicago sponsored by the American Health Lawyers Association. The Association is the largest organization of Health Lawyers and courses included Physician Organizations, Institutional Liability, Stark Regulations and anti-kickback legislation.
Gale talks to physicians in Utica, New York
The Slocum Dickson Medical Group, a multi-disciplinary medical practice that services the Mohawk Valley, held its annual teaching day in Utica on November 12, 2005. Attorney Catherine A. Gale spoke on the new HIPAA Laws and Regulations.
Gale & Dancks Welcomes New Associate
Gale & Dancks is pleased to announce that Matthew J. VanBeveren has joined the firm as an associate. He is a 2005 graduate of Syracuse University College of Law where he was elected to membership on the Law Review and to the Law Review's Executive Board. Matthew was also elected to the Justinian Honorary Law Society. He is currently a member of the New York State Bar Association as well as the Onondaga County Bar Association. Matthew will be working in the area of health law and malpractice litigation. We look forward to introducing Matthew to our clients and colleagues.

Attorney Catherine Gale has been re-appointed to the Judicial Hearing Officer Selection Advisory Committee for the Fourth Judicial Department for a two-year term. The Advisory Committee evaluates and recommends candidates for the position of Judicial Hearing Officer.

Attorney Thérèse Wiley Dancks was a featured speaker at the 12th
Annual Conference of the New York State Nurse Practitioner Association - CNY Chapter. She lectured on the topics of Employment Law, Employment Contracts and Nursing Malpractice. Thérèse also recently chaired a New York State Bar Association Program on the topic of Civil Lawsuits and she will be chairing another New York State Bar Association Program on the topic of Civil Trials this Fall.

Gale Inducted as fellow to American College of Trial Lawyers
Attorney Catherine A. Gale was inducted as a Fellow in the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers. This honor is bestowed each year on a select few trial attorneys nationwide who have met strict criteria for acceptance into this preeminent organization. Catherine's nomination, based upon her renowned trial skills and experience, was supported by counsel who have opposed her as well as attorneys who represent the same side of the table.
Dancks Appointed to Commission to Examine Solo and Small Firm Practice
Attorney Thérèse Wiley Dancks was recently appointed by Chief Judge Judith Kaye to serve on the statewide Commission to examine Solo and Small Firm Practice in New York. The Commission is charged with examining the unique challenges facing solo and small firm practitioners and making recommendations to the Office of Court Administration for improvements in the administration of justice in New York State. In January of 2005, Thérèse also began serving a term as President of the Board of Directors of the Hiscock Legal Aid Society, a non-profit organization that provides legal services to the poor of Onondaga County.
Edwards Joins Firm
Gale & Dancks welcomed Patience Y. Edwards into the firm in February of 2005 as an administrative assistant. She will provide a variety of support services to clients, attorneys and other staff members. Patience is an opera buff and recently worked as assistant stage manager for the Syracuse Opera company's production of the Barber of Seville.

Attorney Catherine A. Gale was invited to speak at Orthopedic Grand Rounds on March 25, 2005 at SUNY Upstate Medical University. Her topic was "Antibiotics, Informed Consent and Legal Issues".

Attorney Thérèse Wiley Dancks recently spoke at the Annual Teaching Day for physicians associated with the Slocum Dickson Medical Group, a multi discipline medical practice that services the Mohawk Valley. Thérèse also lectured to instructors of nursing students and nursing students at St. Elizabeth Nursing School in Utica, New York on the topic of legal issues in nursing.
